It can be difficult to work out crane hire cost. We operate within an industry where overheads are high (think expensive trucks and equipment, highly trained crane operators, road tax and rising fuel cost). We’ve listed the factors that influence crane hire prices in the UK below.
Factors which affect the cost of crane hire
- The type of crane you require; tower crane, HIAB crane (truck mounted), mobile crane, side-lifter
- Distance and time of the hire or to compete the job
- Types of vehicles required to transport and erect the crane
- Flexibility to get the job done
What you get in the price
- Highly trained crane operatives
- Quality, up to date equipment
- Planning and tracking of jobs and lifting
- Comprehensive Goods in Transit Insurance
What can you lift safely with a crane
We specialise in truck-mounted crane hire (HIAB hire) for industrial, commercial and residential uses. Our experienced crane operatives (ALLMI trained) can lift and haul a variety of heavy objects, using our hiab lorry loaders, including but not limited to; all sizes of containers, site accommodation, generators and compressors, machinery, building materials, boats and water craft, plant machinery, hot tubs/jacuzzis, large kitchen equipment (such as pizza ovens) and caravans.
Additional crane hire costs
Very heavy lifting tasks and projects require the preparation of method statements and risk assessments, along with CAD lift plans to illustrate crane positions. An experienced professional could save you time preparing this documentation. The planning of individual routine lifting operations may be the responsibility of those who carry them out (e.g a slinger or crane operator). But for much more complex lifting operations (eg a tandem lift using multiple cranes), a written plan should be developed by a person with significant and specific competencies – adequate training, knowledge, skills and expertise – suitable for the level of the task.
Highway Logistics can provide safe lift planning for you or your business.
Crane hire vs contract lifting
Are you looking for contract lift options rather than regular crane hire? Unsure which it is you need? There are some key differences between crane hire and contract lifts. Safety is of the upmost importance, the law specifies that all tasks involving the use of lifting equipment must be:
- Planned thoroughly and adequately by a competent person
- Assessed for the risks involved, the resources required, the correct procedures and who is responsible
- Adequately supervised when carried out
- Carried out safely
In particular, crane operators, people involved in slinging heavy loads (who are also known as riggers) and lifting operation directors must have received training for the type of task. For further reading, you can view this Health & Safety Executive (HSE) guidance on the legal requirements and safety measures.
Further to regular crane hire, we offer a Contract Lift service, which will see us take on further responsibilities. Highway Logistics will plan the lift, select a suitable crane, will designate an Appointed Person, supervise the lift and arrange the slinging and signalling.
